A be afraid of+ 動名詞或動名詞+ 名詞/代詞。這里動名詞常常表示主語擔(dān)心發(fā)生的事情。這些常常是無意讓發(fā)生的動作：
He never swam far out.He was afraid of getting cramp.
他從來不游得很遠(yuǎn)。他怕抽筋。
She avoids lonely streets.She is afraid of being mugged.
她避免在沒人的馬路上行走。她怕遭搶劫。
She didnt tell him because she was afraid of upsetting him.
她沒有告訴他，因為怕他不安。
be afraid+ 不定式表示主語非常害怕，以致不敢采取某一動作。這些通常是有意讓發(fā)生的動作：
He was afraid to jump.
他不敢跳。(他沒跳。)
She was afraid to protest.
她不敢提出異議。(她保持沉默。)
be afraid后面也可以跟that從句，表示擔(dān)心：
Im afraid (that) hell blame me for this.

但是，特別是用于第一人稱中時，它可表示(相當(dāng)輕度的)抱歉：
