Other people began to make fun of these traditionalists, sending them on "fool's errands" or trying to trick them into believing something false. Eventually, the practice spread throughout Europe.

美國有一個綜藝節目，就叫做Jackass, 中文翻譯過來就是蠢蛋搞怪秀。You Jackass，是省略用法，省略了be動詞are，意思是“你是個傻蛋”，一般用于口語中。
說到這里，會不會想起萬圣節，據大家所知萬圣節同樣也是一個整人的節日喲，萬圣節很重要的標志性東西——南瓜燈jack-o'lantern。
那為什么又出現了jack這個單詞呢?
原來根據典故，愛爾蘭有個名叫Jack的男子，某天，他和惡靈在酒吧喝酒，兩人酒足飯飽后卻沒錢付帳，Jack將惡靈禁錮起來，經過惡靈苦苦哀求，Jack要求其答應一整年都不能騷擾他才「放鬼」。
沒想到后來Jack不幸去世，進不了天堂只好去地獄求惡靈收留，惡靈認為是Jack自己說不要再有瓜葛，所以拒絕接受Jack的請求，只私給他一塊燒紅的木炭讓他放在大白菜內當燈籠照明，后來蘇格蘭小孩有樣學樣，也挖空大白菜放蠟燭點燈。
這個習俗傳到美國后，人們發現圓圓胖胖的的南瓜更適合當空心燈籠。所以自然就變成南瓜的天下，南瓜燈也成為萬圣節最應景的道具之一。
