Ask Dr ? Jeffers This month Dr. Jeffers is answering questions about the human brain and how it works.

  Dear Dr. Jeffers,

One of my colleagues, Felix Moeller, told me that scientists are learning to use computer to ‘read minds’. Is there any truth to this story/

  —Jane Leon, New York, USA

  Dear Ms. Leon,

Well, a lot of research is being conducted in this area, but so far, the brain scanning equipment and corresponding computer programs haven’t been able to actually read thoughts. In one experiment, test subjects(受試者)were connected to scanning equipment and shown two numbers on a screen. They were then asked to choose between adding or subtracting(減)the two numbers. Using this method, researchers were able to follow brain processes and make the correct assumptions(假設)70 percent of the time. It’s not quite mind reading, but it’s certainly a first step.

  —Dr. J.

  Dear Dr. Jeffers,

My three-year-old son loves it when I dig my fingers into his sides and tickle (胳肢)him until he laughs uncontrollably. The other day I noticed him trying to tickle himself but he couldn’t do it. Why not?

  —Glenn Lewis, Vancouver, Canada

  Dear Mr. Lewis,

It’s because of how the brain works. The brain is trained to know what to pay attention to and what to ignore. It causes us to ignore physical feelings we expect to happen, but it causes a mild panic reaction when there is an unexpected feeling. For example, you don’t notice how your shoulder feels while you’re walking down the street. But if someone comes up behind you and touches you lightly on the shoulder, you may jump in fear. It’s that unexpected part that causes the tickle reaction.

  —Dr. J.

  46. What can we learn from the answer to the first question?

  A. Some equipment is able to read human minds.

  B. Some progress has been made in mind reading.

  C. Test subjects have been used to make decisions.

  D. Computer programs can copy brain processes.

  47. People laugh when tickled by others because the feeling is _______.

  A. unexpected

  B. expected

  C. comfortable

  D. uncomfortable

  48. Who has got a little child according to the text?

  A. Ms. Leon

  B. Mr. Lewis

  C. Mr. Moeller

  D. Dr. Jeffers

  49. According to the text, Jeffers is probably _______.

  A. a computer programmer

  B. a test subject

  C. a human brain expert

  D. a medical doctor

  The Cost of Higher Education

Individuals (個人) should pay for their higher education.

A university education is of huge and direct benefit to the individual. Graduates earn more than non-graduates. Meanwhile, social mobility is ever more dependent on having a degree. However, only some people have it. So the individual, not the taxpayers, should pay for it. There are pressing calls on the resources (資源) of the government. Using taxpayers' money to help a small number of people to earn high incomes in the future is not one of them. www. . com/gaokao/beijing

Full government funding (資助) is not very good for universities. Adam Smith worked in a Scottish university whose teachers lived off student fees. He knew and looked down upon 18th-century Oxford, where the academics lived comfortably off the income received from the government. Guaranteed salaries, Smith argued, were the enemy of hard work; and when the academics were lazy and incompetent, the students were similarly lazy. www. . com/gaokao/beijing

If students have to pay for their education, they not only work harder, but also demand more from their teachers. And their teachers have to keep them satisfied. If that means taking teaching seriously, and giving less time to their own research interests, that is surely something to celebrate.

Many people believe that higher education should be free because it is good for the economy (經濟). Many graduates clearly do contribute to national wealth, but so do all the businesses that invest (投資) and create jobs. If you believe that the government should pay for higher education because graduates are economically productive, you should also believe that the government should pay part of business costs. Anyone promising to create jobs should receive a gift of capital from the government to invest. Therefore, it is the individual, not the government, who should pay for their university education.

  68. The underlined word "them" in Paragraph 2 refers to

  A. taxpayers

  B. pressing calls www. . com/gaokao/beijing

  C. college graduates

  D. government resources

  69. The author thinks that with full government funding

  A. teachers are less satisfied

  B. students are more demanding

  C. students will become more competent

  D. teachers will spend less time on teaching

  70. The author mentions businesses in Paragraph 5 in order to

  A. argue against free university education

  B. call on them to finance students' studies

  C. encourage graduates to go into business www. . com/gaokao/beijing

  D. show their contribution to higher education

There was a story many years ago of a school teacher--- Mrs. Thompson. She told the children on the first day that she loved them all the same. But that was a lie. There in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. He didn’t play well with the other children and he always needed a bath. She did not like him.

Then Mrs. Thompson got to know that Teddy was actually a very good boy before the death of his mother. Mrs. Thompson was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when, like all her other students, Teddy brought her a Christmas present too. It was his mother’s perfume(香水)。

Teddy said, “Mrs. Thompson, today you smell just like my Mom used to.” After the children left she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she stopped teaching reading, writing and math. Instead, she began to teach children.

Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. The boy’s mind seemed to come alive. The more she encourage him, the faster he improved. By the end of the sixth grade, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class.

Six years went by before she got a note from Teddy. He wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole lift. He went to college. Mrs. Thompson got two more letters from him with the last one signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, M. D.(醫學博士).

The story doesn’t end there. On his wedding day, Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson’s ear, “Thank you, Mrs. Thompson, for believing in me. You made me feel important and showed me that I could make a difference.”

Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back, “Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn’t know how to teach until I met you.”

  41. What did Mrs. Thompson do on the first day of school?

  A. She made Teddy feel ashamed

  B. She asked the children to play with Teddy.

  C. She changed Teddy’s seat to the front row.

  D. She told the class something untrue about herself.

  42. What did Mrs. Thompson find out about Teddy?

  A. He often told lies.

  B. He was good at math.

  C. He needed motherly care.

  D. He enjoyed playing with others.

  43. In what way did Mrs. Thompson change?

  A. She taught fewer school subjects.

  B. She became stricter with her students.

  C. She no longer liked her job as a teacher.

  D. She cared more about educating students.

  44. Why did Teddy thank Mrs. Thompson at his wedding?

  A. She had kept in touch with him.

  B. She had given him encouragement.

  C. She had sent him Christmas presents.

  D. She had taught him how to judge people.

  Develop Better Relationships with Neighbors

Good neighbors are a lot like electricity or running water:we don’t know how much we depend on them until we don’t have them. They make our lives more pleasant and give us a sense of who we are, both as an individual and as a member of the community. Here’s how to develop your relationships with these very important people in your life.

  61. _________ Often neighbors don’t even know each other’s names. But it’s okay to be the one to break the ice , even if you’ve lived next door for years. Most neighbors enjoy making small talk with the folks on the other side of the fence. So as you see them at work in their yards, smile, wave, and say hello. Ask how their kids are (whether they’re babies or in college), whether they could use an extra cucumber from your garden, or what they think of the price at the local supermarket.

  62. _________ These days, the old Welcome Wagon is a thing of the past. But your new neighbors may be feeling lonely and unsure, especially if they’re far from home, and might appreciate a friendly face bearing fresh-baked chocolate cakes. If they have kids, tell them where the children in the neighborhood live. Recommend the best places to eat and sleep. Invite them over for coffee or tea when they get settled, give them your number, and point to your house as you say good-bye.

  63. __________ Return anything that you borrow from a neighbor, such as tools, in good repair and as soon as you’ve finished with them. Replace anything that belongs to your neighbor that you, your children, or your pets break or soil. Make sure that your car is not blocking their doorway. Such random acts of consideration will have your neighbors talking — and the talk will be good.

  64. __________

If you value a friendship with your neighbors, spend time with them. What better way to meet your neighbors than to invite them to an informal barbecue, pool party, or holiday open house? Better yet, you might even consider throwing a get-together in their honor. Deliver the invitations in person to everyone who lives on your street and chat with each for five minutes before moving on to the next house. This way, you will get an idea of what your neighbors are like so that you can plan for appropriate food and music.

  65. ___________ In a good relationship, it’s really the little things that count. Help to bring in the mail for the elderly neighbor when there is a heavy rain. When your neighbor forgets to take in his rubbish cans, roll them back into his yard. If you’re truly concerned, you’ll know when your neighbor needs some cheering up — a bunch of flowers or a helping hand when it’s needed. All it takes to develop your relationship with neighbors is the respect for their feelings.

  閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。

In one way of thinking, failure is a part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The “spider story’’ often told, Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13 th century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider spinning a web. The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times without success. On the seventh time he made it and went to spin his web. Bruce is said to have taken heart and to have gone on to defeat the English. Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one. Abraham Lincoln, the famous American president, lost elections more times than he won them! He never gave up in the face of failure but kept trying and was eventually elected to Congress and then the presidency.
