  Module 2

Amanda took whatever pills she could get, largely because she was finding life hard to take. “There were a lot of problems,” she says. She had just found out that her parents were splitting (分開). It took her by surprise—and she was shocked. “I woke up one morning, and they told me. ”

On a few occasions during her two years of going to pharming parties(品藥聚會). “My heart would race so fast that it felt like it was going to explode. I felt weak and confused sometimes and even passed_out several times,” she recalls. “But I picked up from the ground because I had a lot of pride in my drinking and drugging. I was really crazy about it and proud of the fact that I could take more than a lot of people. I could come home and have a conversation with my parents.”

Finally, though, things got out of control. “I couldn't go a day without taking something,” she recalls, “and after a while, the pills upset my stomach;it hurt all the time, and I hardly ate. Finally, I couldn't take it any more. I went to my parents and told them I needed help.”

Amanda entered a treatment program and has been calm since her release last January. “Detox(戒癮)was the worst four days of my entire life,”she says.“I was throwing up all the food and had the shakes.”

She doesn't care about drugs. “I'm so hurt from this,” says Amanda, who has ulcers(潰瘍)and damaged kidneys from the drugs and alcohol. “I have to struggle daily to stay calm. But in some ways,I feel lucky I went through it, and I'm out of it now.” Amanda wrote a song called “Goodnight to the Moonlight”. Amanda says,“It's about how it feels to be taking drugs and alcohol, how it hurts, how it makes you feel like you're losing yourself.”

  1. What is the purpose of writing the passage?

A.To tell us that parents have a great influence on their children.

B.To warn us that drugs are a danger to our health and mind.

C.To tell us once you pick up bad habits,it is hard to get rid of.

D.To tell us that as long as you are determined, you will overcome any difficulty.

2.The underlined expression “passed out” ( Paragraph 2)probably means ________.

  A.left out B.suddenly became senseless

C.suddenly kicked outD.wanted to give up

由下文“But I picked up from the ground because I had a lot of pride in my drinking and drugging.”

  3. Which of the following is NOT the side effect of taking drugs on her health?

A.Her stomach felt upset and she couldn't eat anything.

B.She became addicted to drugs and couldn't live without them.

C.She felt confused and almost broke down.

D.She was able to help herself even though she was addicted.

由第三段中“Finally, though, things got out of control.”和“Finally, I couldn't take it any more. I went to my parents and told them I needed help.”

4.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ________.

A.Amanda had such a strong will that she didn't lose herself

B.her song expressed her thanks and delight

C.Detox was not really a success to Amanda

D.drugs and alcohol ruined her health as well as her spirit

Evaluating (評價) Sources of health Information

Making good choices about your own health requires reasonable evaluation. A key first step in bettering your evaluation ability is to look carefully at your sources of healthy information. Reasonable evaluation includes knowing where and how to fins relevant information, how to separate fact from opinions, how to recognize poor reasoning, and how to analyze information and the reliability of sources. __1__

Go to the original source. Media reports often simplify the results of medical research. Find out for yourself what a study really reported, and determine whether it was based on good science. Think about the type of study. __2__

Watch for misleading language. Some studies will find that a behavior “contributes to” or is “associated with” an outcome; this does not mean that a certain course must lead to a certain result.__3__ Carefully read or listen to information in order to fully understand it.

Use your common sense. If a report seems too good to be true, probably it is. Be especially careful of information contained in advertisements. __4__ Evaluate “scientific” statements carefully, and be aware of quackery(江湖騙術).__5__ Friends and family members can be a great source of ideas and inspiration, but each of us needs to find a healthy lifestyle that works for us.

Developing the ability to evaluate reasonably and independently about the health problems will serve you well throughout your life.

A.The goal of an ad is to sell you something.

B.Make choices that are right for you.

C.And examine the findings of the original research.

D.Be sure to work through the critical questions.

E.Distinguish between research reports and public health advice.

F.The following suggestions can help you sort through the health information you receive from common sources.

G.Be aware that information may also be incorrectly explained by an author's point of view.

Go to the original source.

4.A 根據前面一句“Be especially careful of information contained in advertisements.”

Camels certainly like eating green grass, not dry grass. But __1__(strange), camels always keep looking for dry grass __2__ their stomachs are filled up.

A classmate of __3__(I) whose home is on the edge of Turpan Basin in Xinjiang told me his home has two camels;he said you could imagine a camel's appetite, for it can slowly swallow dozens of kilograms of hay (干草). I asked him __4__ camels eat hay, not green grass. He said the camel is a kind of animal with __5__ strong sense of suffering, __6__(fear) its master letting it travel through the desert the next day, and the hay in its stomach is more hunger-resistant __7__ green grass.

The camel has the best tolerance. Unfortunately, many people can only see a camel's outstanding performance, but few understand its __8__(prepare) made for it.

Life, __9__ a camel traveling through the desert, __10__(need) the adequate accumulation, but not everyone can understand it.

  1.______ 2.______ 3.______ 4.______ 5.______

  6.______ 7.______ 8.______ 9.______ 10.______

  2.until/till/before 考查時間狀語從句。 根據上下文邏輯,可知設空處應填:until/till/before。

a classmate of mine=one of my classmates。

like“像……
