2024高考英語二輪(閱讀理解)金品訓練(04)及答案
I was waiting for a phone call from my agent. He had left a message the night before, telling me that my show was to be cancelled. I called him several times, but each time his secretary told me that he was in a meeting and that he would call me later. So I waited and waited, but there was still no call. Three hours passing by, I became more and more impatient. I was certain that my agent didn’t care about my work, and he didn’t care about me. I was overcome with that thought. I started to shout at the phone,“ Let me wait, will you? Who do you think you are?”
At that time I didn’t realize my wife was looking on. Without showing her surprise, she rushed in, seized the phone, tore off the wires, and shouted at the phone,“Yeah! Who do you think you are?Bad telephone ! Bad telephone!”And she swept it into the wastebasket.
I stood watching her, speechless. What on earth?
She stepped to the doorway and shouted at the rest of the house, “Now hear this ! All objects in this room — if you do anything to upset my husband, out you go!”
Then she turned to me, kissed me, and said calmly,“Honey, you just have to learn how to take control. ”With that, she left the room.
After watching a crazy woman rushing in and out, shouting at everything in sight,I noticed that something in my mood(情緒) had changed. I was laughing. How could I have trouble with that phone? Her antics_helped me realize I had been driven crazy by small things. Twenty minutes later my agent did call. I was able to listen to him and talk to him calmly.

In the past ten years, America's National Basketball Association (NBA) has grown
increasingly dependent on the rest of the world to supply players.
When Michael Jordan and Larry Bird won gold in Barcelona in 1992, the Americans were praised for teaching the world how to play basketball. This season, however; 20 percent of NBA rosters(花名冊)will be filled by non-Americans. NBA commissioner David Stem happily
embraces the trend. On a visit to Paris in October, Stern outlined his vision for the future; which is
likely to see Europe hosting NBA games by 2010.

"Our experience in china has been that it is going to be explosive in its growth," said Stern.
The strategy(戰(zhàn)略,策略)in China is television. "We’ve made 14 deals in China with local and
national networks on cable and satellite." The success of Chinese centre Yao Ming has paved the
way for the NBA marketing blitz in China. The NBA, which is broadcasted in more than 200
countries in 42 languages; will put that to the test in October 2004 when the Houston Rockets play
two pre-season games against the Sacramento Kings in Beijng and Shanghai.
The NBA knows
that it needs a global market to compensate for tough times on home soil.

to scout(尋找,覓得)internationally," said Terry Lyons, the NBA's vice-president of international
public relations. "It has increased the level of competition here." As Frenchman Tony Parker and
Argentine Emanuel Ginobili showed in winning championship rings with the San Antonio Spurs
last season, many people can earn the' respect , of their American peers. Others, such as the
Houston Rockets' Chinese centre Yao Ming一number one draft pick in 2002一and the Detroit
Pistons' 18-year-old Serb Darko Milicic一number two overall in this year's draft一are icons

at the time. "While I have nothing against the French.”
Hasnip suffered from foreign accent syndrome(外國口音綜合癥), a rare condition in which
people find themselves speaking their own language Like someone from a foreign country. The
condition usually occurs in people who have experienced a head injury or a stroke(中風)一a
sudden loss of consciousness, sensation, or movement caused by a blocked or broken blood vessel

The condition was first identified during the Second World War in a Norwegian woman
whose head was injured during an attack by the German military. The woman recovered but was
left with a German-sounding accent, to the horror of fellow villagers who avoided her after that.
Researchers have discovered that the combined effect of the damage to several parts of the
brain makes victims lengthen certain syllables, mispronounce sounds, and change, the normal
pitch(高音)of their voice. Those changes in speech add up to what sounds like a foreign accent.
Another researcher, a phonetician(語音學者),says victims of the syndrome don't acquire a
true foreign accent. Their strangely changed speech only resembles the foreign: accent with which
it has a few sounds in common.
When an English woman named Annie recently developed foreign accent syndrome after a
