(2024·日照校際聯(lián)合檢測)At least three people are dead in the Philippines now that Typhoon Hagupit has landed.
The typhoon, which hit the eastern Philippines over the weekend, has blown down trees and sent more than 650-thousand people into shelters before weakening.
“There were very strong winds last night. The roof was beginning to move, and rain was getting inside the rooms,” said a villager.
The storm hit with gusts (強(qiáng)風(fēng)) of over 100 miles per hour. And while the storm has slowed considerably from the super typhoon level it had last week, Hagupit still remains strong enough to create more damage.
Christopher Perez is a local weather forecaster. He says, “We are continuing to expect bad weather and rough ocean waves. Threats of possible flash floods and landslides (滑坡) as well as possible storm waves are occurring in coastal areas.”
Hagupit is expected to roll into the South China Sea tomorrow.
It's currently going westward toward the southern tip of Vietnam, meaning it's unlikely to affect China.
Hagupit's strength in the Philippines is much less severe than Typhoon Haiyan, which rolled through the country in 2024.
Haiyan's tsunami-like storm waves and killer winds left thousands of people dead and leveled_entire_villages.

(2024·濟(jì)南質(zhì)量檢測)The Netherlands on Monday launched its first-ever “intelligent bicycle”, fitted with a set of electronic devices to help bring down the high accident rate among elderly cyclists in this country.
The intelligent bicycle runs on electricity. Its seat shakes when other cyclists approach from behind, while the handlebars do the same when obstacles appear ahead to inform cyclists to pay attention to the danger. It also has a cradle (置物架) in which a computer can be inserted, to wirelessly connect and “talk” to the bicycle through a particular application. The computer also flashes a bright signal if there is an approaching obstacle in the bicycle's path, like a tree, or if another cyclist comes up from behind intending to pass.
A commercial-available bicycle is expected to be on the market in the next two years and should sell for between 1,700 euros to 3,200 euros per bicycle. It weighs about 55 pounds but researchers are working on making the on-board systems smaller.
“Accidents often happen when cyclists look behind them or get a fright when they are passed at high speed,” said Maurice Kwakkernaat, one of the scientists involved in the project, “The on-board system technology has already been at work in the automotive industry.”
“More and more elderly people are using a bicycle, not only for short distances, but also for longer distances,” Dutch Environment Minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen said.“This type of bicycle is truly needed in the Netherlands because it will help us bring down the number of elderly people who are injured every year and allow them to continue enjoying cycling,” she said.
5.When a car appears ahead, the intelligent bicycle will________.
A.stop by itself B.make a noise
C.warn its cyclist
D.change its color

D.It will be free for everyone.

D.The means of transportation in the Netherlands.

(2024·青島三診)Robots that can chat, find misplaced glasses, draw aeroplanes and play with your children are
attracting thousands of visitors during an expo in Tokyo as Japan adapts to changes in society.
Robots, such as the sound sensitive Chapit, answer simple questions and even joke with
people to help them fight loneliness and stay alert in old age.
Japan has one of the world's fastest-ageing societies and the government predicts that by 2050
the proportion of people over 65 will reach 40 percent.“Many older people in Japan live alone and have no one to talk to,” said Kazuya Kitamura representative of the expo organizer.“Communication robots accompany people and don't mind listening to the same stories over and over again.”
Matsumoto's Personal Mobility Robot, equipped with four cameras and a sensor to
recognize the user's centre of gravity, is designed to help elderly move around without pressing
buttons, using joysticks
(操縱桿)
or rotating wheels as in traditional wheelchairs.
The robot can also help find misplaced glasses by identifying them with a sensor.
Other robots, such as the award-winning “DiGRO” can support busy parents who have little time to play with their children. The robot can use the Internet to find a simple image and then draw pictures, keeping children company while parents work.
While Chapit, a relatively simple robot, managed to attract a corporate partner many
researchers, such as Kiyoshi Matsumoto, a professor at the University of Tokyo, struggle to attract sponsors for more expensive projects.
“We have developed a robot that can assist many people, but we still haven't found a sponsor,” said Matsumoto, who added that the cost of the machine, if mass-produced, would be comparable to that of a car. “In the current economic environment there are few companies willing to invest in such a costly project,”
he said.
9.It can be inferred from the text that ________.
A.many children lack love from parents
B.robots helpful to the old will be in great demand
C.robots are the most useful to children
D.robots do better than people in healthcare
10.It is difficult to find sponsors for robots because ________.
A.Japan is suffering economy depression
B.the robots are of poor design
C.the production of robots costs a lot
D.the future market is worrying

I've read your advertisement for an assistant teacher for a children's summer camp. I am quite interested in this position. I am outgoing, energetic, well-organized and responsible; and most importantly, I love working with children! In the past two years, as a monitor in my class, I have proved myself to be an excellent helper to my teachers. I speak English fluently, which enables me to help native English speakers communicate freely and effectively with students in an English-only environment.
I will soon have a long summer vacation, so I have no problem working evenings and weekends. I can start my work next week. I would be pleased to assist both the teachers and students in this challenging and rewarding environment.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
